Adrienne and Chris | Seattle, WA

Recently, I had the opportunity to work with Adrienne and Chris, a couple who was refereed to me by my friend Jessica and I was thrilled to take them out to so some engagement photos. We took to the fields of Discovery Park, a favorite location of mine and shot around for a couple of hours. The light was perfectly overcast and their color scheme worked spectacularly.

What more can you say about these two? They’re precious. Adrienne is totally in love with Chris and vice-versa. It was a blast to watch them interact with one another and just love on each other.

If there’s one thing that Chris knows how to do, it’s make Adrienne laugh!

After tooling around the park for a while, we decided to switch gears a little and head over to Gasworks on Lake Union. A quick costume change and a cup of coffee at Cafe Appassionato, and we were on our way.

In the end, we wound up with some awesome photos despite having to battle a little rain here and there. You can see the rest of them here. Best wishes to you guys in the future. I’m so glad that we have Jessica as a mutual friend. See you around!

Paul and Tina | Seattle, WA

Paul and Tina are two dear friends of mine here in Seattle. I live with Paul for half of a year in one of Mosaic Community Church’s discipleship houses. Tina has a heart of gold. A talented photographer herself, Tina recently finished her degree program at Arizona State and is back in Seattle to be with her honey. We had a great time tooling around Discovery Park last week and got some great photos in the process.

Seriously, who could resist these two?

Seriously, you guys rock and I can’t wait for the wedding in August.

You may have noticed a trend, if you’ve been following my blog for the last month or so. That trend, my sister. I’ve been privileged enough to have the chance to work with her and her fiance Neal a couple of times now and must say that I feel blessed every time we work together. We headed over to discovery park and had a blast romping through the fields.

Well, it finally happened: my baby sister is getting married. I had a chance to take her and her fiance Neal out on a little photo shoot in the California sun a few weeks ago. We had a blast touring around the church where our cousin was recently married. So many great textures and colors to choose from. I’m so proud of you guys!

They’re too cute. Just look at them together. I love how these two interact with one another. You guys are way too fun.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a greater couple. I’m looking forward to having the chance to do another shoot with them up here in Seattle in the coming weeks. I’ll keep you posted as things develop.

19 Frames

A couple of weeks ago, friends and inspirations, The Youngrens, gave me a challenge; well, not me specifically, but the readers of their blog in general. The task? To treat our digital cameras as if they contained film. No LCDs, nineteen frames, and no deleting. As I sat thinking about my submission, I realized that very few people outside of close friends in Seattle (even my immediate family) know where I live and what my neighborhood is like. So, I’m double-dipping with this post. I have nineteen frames ready to go that tell the story of my home—1825 E Denny Way—and the block surrounding it. I tried not to stray too far, keeping myself within a one-block radius from home to give you a taste of the world which I inhabit every day.

I started with the view out my front door. Who could resist these trees in this light? Not I.

Coming back to our front door, I started capturing some of the textures that make this well-aged brick structure so unique. From the stony cracked faces of the bricks and masonry, to our overgrown planters and rusting street numbers (which I’ve been meaning to fix for weeks now), these are the things that make our little duplex unique and stick out from the apartment complexes that dominate the area.

I soon ventured further out into the neighborhood to capture what our area is all about.

There are so many unique and rich textures around my home. It was really difficult to hold myself to just nineteen frames, but I did it! I really enjopyed limiting myself in this way. It forced me to slow down and really measure the weight of each shot before taking it. It really did remind me of shooting film, a feeling that I’ve missed for some time now. In short, I loved it.

This one below is one of my favorites from the day. When I finally saw the image on my screen in Lightroom, it just about screamed for a light sepia wash.

Did I mention that it was sunny out when I took these? The light was absolutely beautiful, but evidence of our all-too-common rain was everywhere. Plants we coming up all over the place, even in places where one wouldn’t expect to find them.

Dan and Amy | Maternity

With their new baby girl due in just a few weeks, Dan and Amy asked me to go out with them and take some photos of the two of them, but Amy’s belly more specifically. I had a blast walking around Madison Park on a sunny Seattle Sunday (extra points for alliteration?) with these guys while they just rocked out being themselves. Really, you guys were naturals on camera and I can’t wait to meet the new addition.

Seriously, you guys rock. I’m so blessed to know you and have you be part of our family at Mosaic. The Lord bless you, and keep you; The Lord make His face shine on you, and be gracious to you; The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen.

The Disputed Accuracy of Groundhogs

Two weeks ago, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, thereby signaling the onset of six more weeks of winter. Phil may have it down for the east coast, but his aim seems to be a little off when it comes to us here in the pacific northwest. We have had a marvelously beautiful week here in Seattle. It’s been sunny and, for lack of a better word, awesome. I even broke out my sandals today.

It’s hard to look around and not see spring coming and of course, Spring brings flowers. I normally don’t go in for flower pictures, but it was just too exciting to see color on the trees again.

It was really cool to see people out enjoying the parks again. Cal Anderson park was packed, as was Green Lake this morning. It’s hard, in my mind, to find a prettier city than Seattle while the weather is good.

I loved that someone pinned these paper flowers to the trunk of this tree. Seattle’s creative spirit is just awesome. There’s a couple of roundabouts near my place where someone’s planted vegetables in place of the usual low grasses and such.

Lake Union Sky

Beautiful weather rarely goes unnoticed or unappreciated in Seattle, least of all in the winter. We had a really sweet sunset the other day with some killer partly cloudy sky to go along with it. I couldn’t resist taking the ol’ 40D out for a spin at Gasworks Park. I got a killer skyline view, but it’s way too big to put on the site here without sacrificing a ton of detail. You can check that one out on flickr. Be sure to view the full size. It’s even larger than the one online. but I wanted it to be a somewhat manageable size.

I caught the tail end of the sunset as it dissapeared over Queen Anne hill, leaving the sky tinged with pink and orange. Just beautiful.

And of course, I couldn’t resist the urge to do some long exposure work with the rocks and shoreline while I was out.

Home Espresso

We’ve got a new addition here at the house on Capitol Hill, a brand new, bouncing baby espresso machine! (points for alliteration?) My roommate Steven brought it home from the great State of Texas after the Christmas holiday and we had a chance to bring it to life—sputtering, mess-making life—tonight. Our first shots were, for lack of a better word, terrible. However, we got the hang of it and were soon pulling shots that were almost drinkable. Stay tuned for more information as it develops. We’re looking forward to getting to know our new member of the family in the months to come.

Golden Gardens Revisited

Is anyone else staring to notice a theme here? I love this location. Maybe I’m just a sucker for large bodies of water and sunsets, but I love shooting down here by the water. It puts me at peace and relaxes me. I love waiting out the light until it’s low enough to get the photos that I’m looking for. In the mean time, I get to sit and watch the sunset and listen to the waves lap against the rocks in 30 degree weather. Yep, winter has arrived and it’s only the beginning of December. Regardless, I hope you enjoy the photos.

You’ve gotta love sailboats at sunset. I saw these guys coming in while I was unpacking my equipment and knew that this was going to be a good day for shooting.

You might recognize these posts from some earlier images. It’s such a nice location. The tide was further out than last time I was here which exposed several more pilings. I like.

This is probably my favorite image if the day. The lighting. composition, and colors really came together in my opinion.

As the light started fading further, I switched to my 50 f/1.4 to get some sweet shallow DoF shots of this chain link fence.
